Where flavour and nutrition collide

The Gastro Gnome is a super natural creature hurtling through the universe powered by raw rocket fuel. Real, living, and incredibly yummy super-powered food is my mantra; sharing it through feeding, education and writing is my art. I’m on a journey of exquisite taste, of larger-than-life energy, and of lots of laughter.

I earned my MA in Gastronomy from the University of Adelaide in 2007 – the same year in which I embraced a high raw way of eating. Realizing that raw and wholefoods cuisine can potentially be something essential existing at a very important point in space - the intersection of nutrition and flavour - I stocked up on super living fuel and set out in my rocketship for that very place.

Exploring the realm of nutritional cuisine, I realized that there was a major disconnect between our ideas of “healthy” and “delicious.”  Drawing upon a background in the study of food and culture, I appreciate that nourishment is not just about vitamins and minerals, proteins and carbs.  Food is pleasure, food is memory, food is tradition, food is a language in which we share our values and tell our most intimate stories. How do we bridge the perceived gap between a tradition of richly cooked, animal-based foods and the very real need to fill our tummies with life-giving, plant-based energy?

The first step is to hold our food to a higher standard: that every single thing we eat should excite the tastebuds, nourish the body, and sustain the soul. We humans have access to the knowledge of how to eat in this way.  It just takes some remembering.  As we begin to cleanse ourselves from years of toxic eating and living habits, our senses become sharper, our intuition stronger.  We look to older, simpler ways of eating, and learn to listen to our bodies. We don’t have to abandon food traditions to be healthy – we just need to examine what kind of energy we want to consume and share with the world, and begin to reshape how we eat and the stories we tell about food.
